BTN Makes Iowa City Stop

The Big Ten Network made a stop at Iowa’s practice on Saturday. Here are some comments from BTN analysts Gerry DiNardo (@gerrydinardo) & Howard Griffith (@HowardGriffith) via their twitter feeds related to what they saw at practice:

Really looking forward to this season I think that the coaching changes will have a big impact on the performance of Iowa. This fresh start will hopefully bring more energy to the Hawkeye football program, something that it has needed for quite sometime.

I cannot help but remember that in Iowa’s rather magical ’09 run we were stuck starting Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher at RB … both of whom were freshman.

While we’re certainly stuck with a ton of inexperience at RB, it’s still a bit reassuring to know that we still have Bullock (SO), Johnson (SO), Dawson (JR), Garmon (FR), and Hill (FR).  In other words, it’s not like the cupboard is bare.  Bullock is a guy who the coaches liked enough to project as a #3 WR right out of fall-camp … that is a BIG positive!  Now that Bullock isn’t bouncing around and has a definite position home … he’ll probably develop into a much more consistent back for us.

Similarly, Johnson has made a few decent runs for us … however, I’m pretty confident in asserting that we have yet to see his best.  When guys are recovering from injury … that often provides them with a big hit to their confidence … and the biggest thing that they have to overcome is their own psychology.  I think that Johnson is capable of showing us what the coaches originally saw in him.

As for Dawson, he’s a guy who had a ‘ship from us out of high school.  Also, he was higher than 4-star Coe on IWCC’s depth chart at RB … and was pretty productive in the JUCO ranks.  He’s a guy who is capable of being a lot more than just a serviceable RB for us.

And, the above guys are already on campus!  Come this fall, Garmon, Hill, and Meier will also enter the fray … and that will help give the group an extra “bump” when it comes to depth.
